Power breakdown: demand for resignations of Faisal Vawda and Omar Ayub

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly demanding the resignations of Umar Ayub and Faisal Vawda on the issue of power breakdown.

The resolution, submitted by PML-N MPA Sameera Komal, called for setting up a commission to investigate the nationwide power breakdown.

The text of the resolution states that all the concerned officers including the Minister of Power and Water should be summoned in the Commission of Inquiry and the Commission of Inquiry should determine the persons who are negligent in their duties.

The resolution demanded that the commission of inquiry make its report public within a week and that Federal Ministers Omar Ayub and Faisal Vawda resign immediately.

It may be recalled that the Guddu power plant malfunctioned at 11:41 pm on Saturday night due to which the country’s high transmission was tripped and in less than a second the system frequency was reduced from 50 to zero and the power plants were shut down.

The power systems of the power plant started shutting themselves down and ten thousand three hundred and two megawatts were out of the system due to the fault. Tripping of 500 KV system of National Transmission and Dispatch Company affected the power transmission system.

After the breakdown, NTD formed a high-level inquiry committee. The Central Power Generation Company has suspended seven personnel working at the thermal power station following a nationwide power breakdown.

The officials, including a junior engineer, two operators and two attendants, have been suspended following an initial inquiry.
